Argentina Beat Switzerland 3-1 to Reach FIFA World Cup Semi-Finals
Kansas City, July 12: Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals after defeating Switzerland 3-1 in a dramatic extra-time thriller on Saturday night.
Argentina made a dream start as Alexis Mac Allister headed home from a Lionel Messi corner in the 10th minute to give La Albiceleste an early advantage. However, Switzerland refused to give up and found the equaliser in the 67th minute through Dan Ndoye, forcing the match into extra time.
The turning point came when Swiss striker Breel Embolo was sent off late in the match, leaving Switzerland with ten men. Argentina finally broke the resilient Swiss defence in extra time as Julián Álvarez curled in a stunning strike in the 112th minute before Lautaro Martínez sealed the victory deep into stoppage time.
With the 3-1 victory, Argentina advance to the semi-finals, where they will face England in one of the biggest clashes of the tournament. The win also keeps Lionel Messi’s dream of another World Cup title alive.
